At the hearing of the case Regina v. Ah Long on Thursday last, in the Resident Magistrate's Court, Lawrence, a Chine3e merchant, named Wong Ong, acted as interpreter. Mr Wong Ong speaks excellent English, and still better French, and Creole he also understands so that as there are two or three gentlemen at Lawrence well up in these languages, Mr Wong. Ong as a Chinese interpreter is a great boon to the district7when there are now resident so many of his countrymen who do not understand a .word of English. We are of opinion that a salary ought to be paid to him, and his services permanently retained. It is not every man who Avould consent unrewarded, to neglect his business for seven hours and a half as Mr, Wong Ong did on Thursday last. Bruce Herald, Volume IV, Issue 167, 3 July 1867, Page 4
